Ian W Tester DDS, MSc

Current North American dental education has lost focus when it comes to teaching how our patients function and what goes wrong leading to dysfunction. Iatrogenic consequences, missed diagnoses and early failure of dental therapies are the result. This entertaining, fast paced lecture will outline the latest evidenced-based knowledge as taught by The Vienna School of Interdisciplinary Dentistry (www.viesid.com). Based on the teachings of Professor Dr. Rudolph Slavicek who was the long-time Dean of the University of Vienna, you will be introduced to concepts that are critical in making a complete diagnosis and developing a successful treatment plan

Lecture topics:

  1. 10 critical questions you must ask before beginning any dental treatment
  2. Current concepts of occlusion: ignore this and you can expect negative outcomes
  3. The clinical examination: 10 steps to understanding your patient’s function and dysfunction
  4. Why you need to palpate muscles and what that tells you
  5. Accurate study casts, facebows, mountings: why should you spend the time? (Hint it will ultimately save you time)
  6. Expert tips and tricks to better diagnosis your patient’s current occlusion and function
  7. Centric relation? is that still a thing?
  8. Night Guards: when why and how?
  9. Hands on Demonstrations:
    • how to fit and adjust a night guard (presented live with video)
    • proper bite registration techniques
  10. Case examples from clinical practice that will illustrate the topics covered
